The high horizon line allows more water to lead one into the scene. It works well to accent the height of the bridge! Unfortunately our eye begins to "read" the water from the bottom and we get a little "stuck" with the insistent dark thin lines on the right edge of the picture. These ten or so lines lead us up to the very (a bit too dark) triangle SHADOW.
I like the loose UTRILLO like perspective of the painting...and the COLOR is yummy!

This painting illustrates the Bierstadt (and Hudson River school artists) idea of a very large, dominate and often dark valued FORGROUND to achieve fantastic aerial perspective...
...or is this an homage to Edward Hopper? Well done.

This painting is rather marvelous in its water reflection
and feeling of light ! uh...notice the upper right hand corner...( part of one of Joes famous Lighthouse Paintings)
this is what happens when you photograph a glassed painting.!
Also as I age...I reflect on how literal I want to report a specific scene.
( what is the long white rectangle...amongst the trees? Would a person other than a Seaside resident...care what it is?)
I now tend to eliminate MORE of the details...if they detract from the composition.
